Gender Diversity & Eating Disorders

We Can Help
Are you seeking affirming and competent care to support healthier body image or recovery from an eating disorder? If you are a member of the trans or gender diverse community, or a family member of someone who identifies as gender diverse or is exploring gender diversity, please read on.
Respect for All Bodies and Identities:
Providers at Bucks LGBTQ are both specialized in eating disorders and more specifically among the gender diverse population. We are an affirming collective that respects all bodies, identities, abilities and expressions and understands diverse identities.
Eating Disorders and Gender Diversity:
When members of the gender diverse community develop eating disorders and/or struggle with body image, it is important to seek care from providers who understand their needs. Eating disorders can connect to their identity or they can result from the stresses unique to being the member of a marginalized group. The providers at Bucks LGBTQ Center and Bucks Eating Support Collaborative work through a trauma-informed lens, and can support healing using a variety of modalities: CBT, DBT, Somatic therapies and EMDR. Bucks ESC/Bucks LGBTQ Center is well-known in the Philadelphia area as the preeminent center to seek care for eating disorders, particularly within the trans and gender diverse community.
Seek Care From Providers Who are Affirming and Have Lived Experience:
The providers at Bucks LGBTQ Center are members of the LGBTQ community, family members and parents of those in the LGBTQ community, and allies. Members of our team are go-to’s for consultation from other professionals, and we speak nationally and internationally on supporting LGBTQ folx. When you enter the Center, you will notice a difference immediately. Whether it is safe symbols, attention to names and pronouns, or an overall sense of respect for diverse bodies and identities. Our clinicians strive for affirming, empathic care.
All Paths to Recovery:
As with other Bucks Support Services groups, therapists and dieticians who work at the LBGTQ Center care for gender diverse people with body image and eating disorders is an a’All Paths to Recovery’ approach. We meet people where they are, and work with them in any way that is needed to foster healing and growth. This may include utilizing Intuitive Eating, Health at Every Size (HAES) and Cognitive Behavioral approaches.
Collaboration with Medical Professionals:
Some people who are working on eating disorder recovery seek affirming medical procedures. The Clinicians at Bucks LGBTQ Center can help with these needs, collaborating with local physicians, endocrinologists and LGBT-health practices and centers. We utilize an informed consent process for writing letters of affirmation.
